Day 138: Wanting the Good

John 15:7 – If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

The way to get what you want is different than what you might think. It has more to do with us changing than with God giving.

God can make you different. If you “remain” in Jesus, His words remain in you and His words will change you as you believe them. By Jesus’ words, we gain perspective and find out what is really valuable. When we learn what is truly valuable, we start to desire it.

Jesus says that you can ask for whatever you desire, and it will be done for you. The way to get what you want is to have your desires changed by Jesus’ words. Think about how happy a person can be when he gets whatever he wants. This is one of the many wonders of being a Christian. You get what you want because Jesus changes you on the inside, making what you want and what He wants the same.

It is important to realize that if Jesus’ words are not behind our desire, we don’t get what we want:

James 4:3 – You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures.

So, the only option left is for us to change. It is a wonderful thing when our desires change because we want what is good and get what we want. This is exactly what the Holy Spirit can do in us.
