What is the UPMA?
It’s a non-profit organization that was set up to encourage the use of gold and silver as legal tender money. UPMA stands for United Precious Metals Association and is headquartered in Alpine, Utah with several branches in other states as well.
Why use gold and silver as money?
Gold and silver directly counteract the effects of currency debasement. That’s when changes in the amount of currency the government puts into circulation cause the value of our money to go down. Its deceptive because it looks to us like prices are all going up, but it’s not the store’s fault, its “currency debasement” causing it. Gold goes up with prices and if we use it as money, the prices stay mostly the same. You can learn more here.
How does it work?
It’s just like an online bank account that uses real gold and silver in a vault. You buy some of gold or silver coins or Goldbacks and it is physically deposited in the UPMA. You can do all the same things you do with an online bank account like make deposits, make withdrawals and send money. You can even use a debit card. The system makes it easy to switch back and forth to dollars too.
