Day 70: Saving Lot

Genesis 14:13-16

One who had escaped came and told Abram, the Hebrew. Now he lived by the oaks of Mamre, the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were allies of Abram. When Abram heard that his relative was taken captive, he led out his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued as far as Dan. He divided himself against them by night, he and his servants, and struck them, and pursued them to Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus. He brought back all the goods, and also brought back his relative, Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

It is clear from this story that Abram’s life was changed by his faith in God. Where once Abram was too afraid of the Egyptians to admit he was married to Sarai, he was now willing to risk his life to save Lot against incredible odds.

The record states that Abram had only 318 men fighting. It is clear that God was involved in bringing Abram such success. Notice that Abram and his men still had to fight. God didn’t tell them to sit back and allow Him to do everything. Sometimes, God wants us to participate in His work. It doesn’t mean that He isn’t the one behind it, in fact without Him we would fail for sure.

What we read suggests that it was because of love for Lot that Abraham chose to take on such a big enemy. We know that Abram accepted the fact that God had promised him children. Because of this, it wasn’t possible for Abram to die yet. In a sense Abram was invincible. To worry about his life would have displayed a lack of faith in what God had said and it is possible that this was clear to Abram.

Notice that God honors our faith in His word. Supernatural things happen through us too when we believe what God says.
