Day 110: The More Wonderful Miracle

Luke 10:17-20 :

The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”

He said to them, “I saw Satan having fallen like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will in any way hurt you. Nevertheless, don’t rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

We see here that Jesus was capable of giving normal people the ability to have power over superior spiritual forces. Naturally, humans don’t have power over the spiritual realm. In that realm we are weak and unable to defend ourselves. This is not a very popular idea in my culture. Many people think that Satan doesn’t even exist. They think that they are in complete control of themselves. They don’t realize anything about the evil that is happening to them from the spiritual world. When God gives us eyes to see the evil and good in the world around us, things makes more sense.

Remember in verse three of this chapter that that Jesus said: “Behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves”? Why would Jesus send them out with such power and then tell them that they were sheep? This is difficult to understand but very important. We, on our own, are just sheep in the spiritual world. We can’t hurt anyone but ourselves, but God can cause a sheep to overpower a wolf. It would be very unwise for a sheep to think that he is actually able to overpower wolves by himself. When this happens, the sheep is likely to be harmed if it isn’t saved. It is only because of the power we have from God that we are able to take action against evil powers. It is very important to understand this because if a man thinks he can take on evil powers on his own, he is likely to not only fail, but to be harmed.

It is amazing to have supernatural powers, but Jesus makes it clear that for a man who is heading to Hell, having power is not the most important thing. The more wonderful miracle is that we are saved from Hell and that our names have been put on God’s “Heaven list.” A person who realizes that he was going to Hell, is happier to be saved than to have supernatural powers. I believe that we should not be distracted by miracles. Many people are still on their way to Hell, and we need to stay focused on bringing the message of Jesus to them so that they can be saved. Miraculous healings help us stay well so that we can bring more people to the biggest miracle of all: salvation. Sometimes, God even uses sickness to bring people to Him. We need to stay focused on Him because we are still sheep among wolves.
