Luke 6:12 :
It happened in these days, that he went out to the mountain to pray, and he continued all night in prayer to God.
I heard it said, and I believe it is true, that you can tell something about what you really value by taking a look at how you spend your free time. I’ve heard many stories of people who have gone out to “party” all night long. I’ve also heard of those ambitious ones who “work” all night or “pull an all-nighter” in college. Some people camp out for sales to get a good place in line.
This verse is really making me think today. I don’t believe I have ever really planned to pray all night, but of all of the ways to spend my time, it is difficult to think of something more valuable.
I want to make it very clear that I don’t believe that Jesus felt only duty in his prayer that night. I think that visiting with His Father was the highpoint of His life. I also think that He was about to make a big decision and went to His Father to get counsel.
Jesus’ mind was filled with the truth of God and He knew how important talking to God was. When I think about it, it is amazing how little time I spend with an all-powerful being who loves me and knows exactly what is best for me. I spend far too much time worrying about what I am going to do. When that happens, there is probably only one thing to do and that is to pray. Perhaps if I spent more of my free time praying, I wouldn’t worry so much.
