Luke 10:5-9 :

Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in that same house, eating and drinking the things they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Don’t go from house to house. Into whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat the things that are set before you. Heal the sick who are therein, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God has come near to you.’

Here we read about what the 70 sent out ones were to do when they came to a house in a town that was receptive to the message that Jesus was bringing. Evidently, these houses represent cities in which there was a “good crop.” It is a wonderful thing to have the peace of Jesus rest on you. Anyone who has already become a Christian knows what this peace is like. Jesus sent out people of peace to bring peace to others. What a blessing it is to have a messenger of God bringing peace in a time of judgment. That is what we, as Christians, learn about in the Bible because of what Jesus has done.

Looking back at yesterday’s lesson, we see that this was a time of judgment because it was a time of harvest. When God’s peace is given, it means that you pass through the judgment into safety. It’s like, but far worse than, taking an exam; a time of judgment from God is a very fearful thing. We need to make sure now that our time of judgment at the end of our age goes well for us. We need to be prepared and ready for that time. If you don’t have peace with God, then you should come to Christ today, so that you can be ready today and have peace from God now, by believing that Jesus has taken away your sin by His death. We want to be those on whom the peace of God rests.

The Bible also indicates that there will be a judgment at the end of our age for Christians that will determine our reward. We are already given peace with God as soon as we accept Christ’s salvation, but there is another kind of peace you have in a family when you please your parents or your husband. We need to be pleasing our Father in Heaven and Jesus the future Husband of the Church. What a dishonor it would be for us in judgment to not be found to have done what we were supposed to do.
