Luke 20:26-38
They weren’t able to trap him in his words before the people. They marveled at his answer, and were silent. Some of the Sadducees came to him, those who deny that there is a resurrection. They asked him, “Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man’s brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up children for his brother. There were therefore seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died childless. The second took her as wife, and he died childless. The third took her, and likewise the seven all left no children, and died. Afterward the woman also died. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them will she be? For the seven had her as a wife.”
Jesus said to them, “The children of this age marry, and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage. For they can’t die any more, for they are like the angels, and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called the Lord ‘The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him.”
In this passage, Jesus tells mankind some secrets about the spiritual realm similar to what we learned in the parable about Lazarus and the Rich Man. In answering this question, Jesus tells us that angels aren’t sexual beings. We also learn that humanity will no longer have a need for marriage in heaven either. It isn’t a good idea for us to put our identities into our “sexuality.” In heaven, there will be no need for “sexual equality.” It’s an important thing to consider because we are told in the Bible that, as Christians, we should be focusing on heavenly things. This is not to say we shouldn’t marry, we should marry if that is God’s gift, but we need to remember that our identity isn’t in sexuality, but in Christ.
The Sadducees were similar to some evolutionists today. They actually disregarded miraculous acts. I can’t imagine how they could do that when Jesus was there healing everyone right in front of them, but, evidently they were willing to hold on to their anti-super-naturalistic beliefs and didn’t like the idea of hell which is also disregarded today. They tried to make a version of Judaism that left out the supernatural. Jesus makes it clear that the Bible, when properly read, obviously includes the supernatural. It is comical that Jesus uses the talking bush that Moses saw that didn’t burn up to explain that the Bible used present tense to talk about people who had died. This also tells us that even the tenses of words are very important when interpreting scripture.
Science: Many try to claim that “Science” tells us that the Bible isn’t accurate. The problem with this is that science doesn’t say anything. It’s just a tool. There are many scientists who don’t believe in the Bible, but claim to replace it with science, but that cannot be. Science is a practice that depends on the law of cause and effect. To do an experiment you have to believe that your experiment is a cause and the result is an effect. You can’t even do a single experiment without axiomatically believing in this concept. When you apply science to evolution, science tells us that “Nothing” is definitely too small of a cause for the effect of “The Universe” by anyone’s observation!
