Romans 8:1-4
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death. For what the law couldn’t do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh; that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
A life of trying to do what is right and falling down over and over again isn’t a good life. Living like that makes us constantly feel like we are under judgment. All we do is try to do what is good but end up doing what is wrong. The solution to the problem of Christian living is for us to live “in Christ Jesus” and “walk according to the Spirit.”
To walk according to the Spirit is to trust in the Holy Spirit. In order to trust the Holy Spirit we are required to stop trusting our own “flesh” or humanity. The Law, even though it is Spiritual, was written as instructions to humanity. Our humanity is incapable of doing what the law says, but by trusting in the Holy Spirit instead of our own humanity, we will find that “the ordinance of the law” will be fulfilled in us.
So, you can see that the Christian walk, or life, is a life of dependence on the Holy Spirit in order to do what is right instead of following human rules and regulations. This is because God has given us His Son who makes it possible for us to please Him.
Because of this, we don’t have to live the Christian life in misery. We do fall down and stop trusting at times, but there is a road to freedom from sin that is clearly marked out for us here in The Gospel. God wanted us to know this and if we really want to walk the Christian walk, we need to depend on the Holy Spirit and not on human ability.
