Genesis 4:25 – 5:1a

Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, “for God has appointed me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.” There was also born a son to Seth, and he named him Enosh. Then men began to call on Yahweh’s name.

This is the book of the generations of Adam.

This is the end of the portion of Genesis that I believe Moses was attributing to Adam. This section started in verse 2:4. Notice that the styles do seem to change at certain points in Genesis. It is very likely that Moses, as a prince in Egypt, had access to an extensive library and was trained in reading multiple languages as well. It makes good sense that he collected the Hebrew writings and sayings that he was aware of during his time in Egypt.

God was gracious to Eve and gave her another son. It’s interesting to note that Adam and Eve had “family problems.” Now we know why we have them. We are also sinners like they were and we pass our sin on to our children too.

The thing that really stands out here to me is the last thing that Adam documents: “Then men began to call on Yahweh’s name.” I want to ask, “What took so long?” I believe that I know why it took so long for men to realize their true state and ask God for His help. That’s the way we tend to be. We tend to try to do what we can on our own, instead of calling on God to help us. We got right into murder and the economy, but we had to wait a few generations to seek God’s help. God wants us to finally realize that we need him. This is one of the biggest themes in the Bible and God seeks for us to also call on His name.

Romans 10:13:

For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
