Genesis 12:14-20
It happened that when Abram had come into Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. The princes of Pharaoh saw her, and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. He dealt well with Abram for her sake. He had sheep, cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. Yahweh plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this that you have done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that she was your wife? Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now therefore, see your wife, take her, and go your way.”
Pharaoh commanded men concerning him, and they brought him on the way with his wife and all that he had.
Sarai must have been amazingly beautiful. Even the princesses of Egypt were talking about it. Pharaoh tried to take her as his wife and ended up giving Abram quite a bit of money in animals and servants, but it didn’t work out well. God made sure that Abram was exposed. We can see that God really loved Abram, but He wasn’t going to let him get away with this lie.
The Egyptians figured it out after they were plagued with whatever God inflicted them with. We aren’t told what they were plagued with or how they discovered that Sarai was actually Abram’s wife, but they did figure it out. They let Abram keep all of the stuff but forced him to leave. I am pretty sure that the Pharaoh wasn’t too happy with Abraham after that.
When we lack faith, we cause trouble for those we love and for our own future. It is better for us to not fear and trust that God will help us as we stay faithful to His word. I believe that God was causing Abram to grow in His faith because we see amazing results later in his life.
