Day 22: Doubting God

Genesis 3:2-5

The woman said to the serpent, “Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat, but of the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

The serpent said to the woman, “You won’t surely die, for God knows that in the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Eve was well informed and knew exactly what God had actually said. She explained it very carefully to the serpent. Satan, however, changed the subject, after having been corrected in his false question. He immediately spoke another lie. This time he didn’t ask a question but directly opposed the word of God; saying just the opposite of what God told Adam and Eve.

Satan accused God of lying to Adam and Eve to keep them from knowing more and becoming like Him. In the same few sentences, he tells Eve that by eating the fruit she will become more enlightened. Not only that, she would be like God Himself! Satan was able to
instill a doubt while at the same time puffing up Eve’s pride and desire for intelligence and power.

Notice how a single lie about the word of God allowed Satan to build a whole new theology! It is so important for us to believe every word of God. None of us are perfect and know all of God’s word, but when we do know it, we should never let it go. If we do, our world could easily come crashing down in seconds. May God give us power to live in faith and may He continue to remind us of His word by the Holy Spirit.
