Day 124: Lights On

Luke 11:33-36 :

“No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, that those who come in may see the light. The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore when your eye is good, your whole body is also full of light; but when it is evil, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore see whether the light that is in you isn’t darkness. If therefore your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly full of light, as when the lamp with its bright shining gives you light.”

One of the big things that changes when we become Christians is that we become aware of the truth about sin in our lives. When we spend time close to God and His word it’s like spending time in very bright sunlight. Everything there is to see will be exposed in this light. As believers, we appreciate this light because it shows us the way and allows us to see ourselves and where we need to confess our sin so that we can maintain a good relationship with God.

God’s truth is like light and if we really do believe in God and His word, we will want to spend time in the light. We won’t cover it up, but we will put it on a stand so that others can gain the benefit of the light as well.

We read here that the eye is like the light of the body. When our eyes are set on good things, our bodies respond by knowing the truth and acting accordingly. I believe that one way to apply this is with God’s word. When we read the Bible our eyes are used to focus on the truth of God and it helps us to know how to operate our bodies as God intends for us to operate them. If we avoid God’s word, we may do things with our bodies that will bring Him and ourselves down. If we decide to not learn God’s word it fills our minds with darkness and we can’t see where we are or where we are going.

We should let the truth of the Bible fill our minds and then we will learn what we should do with our bodies. We will need to truth of God’s word and the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish this. Just knowing God’s word isn’t enough. We must have Power to do what it says as well.
