Day 22: Help to Israel

Luke 1:54-55 :

He has given help to Israel, his servant, that he might remember mercy,
As he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and his seed forever.”

Mary speaks in a very humble way about Israel here. Not everyone was speaking that way according to some historians. Many were willing to take Israel back by force without the presence of the Messiah. Mary realized that Israel needed mercy. This indicates that she knew that they needed something from God that they didn’t deserve.

Mary also knew that they were promised a future. She mentions a very old prophesy here but it is a critical one even for today.

Genesis 12:7 :

Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your seed.”

There are big arguments today over who gets to have the land in Israel. If you believe the Bible, it is very clear who the land belongs to. Some would say that the land belongs to Israel as a nation. I agree that this is true, but that isn’t who the land ultimately belongs to. We know this because Paul goes to great lengths to explain that the word “seed” here is singular. It’s difficult to read it that way in English, but it makes more sense in Hebrew. Fortunately, Paul has already explained it to us and it does stand for a single person. It shouldn’t be a surprise who that person is because, after all, Mary is the one talking. Mary was living under Roman occupation and knew that the land would someday have to belong to the Son of God.

The land of Israel, belongs to Jesus. He won’t need us to help Him take it away from whoever stands on it when He’s ready to take it. The Bible says He will take it back by Himself. Obviously, Jesus isn’t meek and mild in the way that He is so often portrayed, but I make a point to talk about this here because confusion abounds today.

Some have accused Christians of wanting to make war until Jesus takes over. This is completely wrong! Christians are to get out of the way so that Jesus can make war. Jesus made it very clear that He would be the avenger not us. This doesn’t mean that we don’t protect ourselves and our families from intrusion and destruction. This is about avenging evil and taking back land for Israel. When Israel got the land they have it was taken in defensive action or purchased. The Jews are an appropriate custodian of the land for Jesus their Messiah, but I don’t need to do any taking of land. Believe me, God will do it and it will be horrible to watch. It would be wise for the United States to stay on Jesus’ side of the matter, and that way things will turn out good for us in the end. What alarms me right now is this idea that we can involve ourselves in taking land away from the Jews. What is to become of us when we help do this? How could the God of the Bible bless a nation that helps people go against his word by choosing not to help Israel?
