Luke 10:21-24 :
In that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.”
Turning to the disciples, he said, “All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is, except the Father, and who the Father is, except the Son, and he to whomever the Son desires to reveal him.”
Turning to the disciples, he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things that you see, for I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see the things which you see, and didn’t see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and didn’t hear them.”
I think that it is pretty obvious most people around Jesus didn’t really understand what what He was up to. We know from what He said in these verses as well as other in other places we have read that Jesus was keeping some things a secret until later. Jesus was following a plan given to Him by His Father. We can see here that He was thrilled with His Father’s way of doing things. God has a way of giving big gifts to the poorest most insignificant people in the world. Jesus said, by the Holy Spirit, that this kind of thing is “well-pleasing” to the Father. The disciples were pretty normal guys and weren’t really that significant when Jesus chose them. Later they became strong men of God and it is clear that it was God who did it and not the men He chose.
Jesus says that who He really was and who the Father was, was kept a mystery to everyone but those He chose to reveal it to, and right here we see that sometimes He would speak to the crowd, sometimes to His disciples in public and at other times to the disciples in private.
God Has revealed to us as Christians things that many prophets and kings wanted to see. Even the disciples at this point in the story of Jesus didn’t yet know what was later to be revealed to them and to us. We are the believers of a precious message that has the power to change the world. God chose to show it to sinners who couldn’t help themselves so that we would demonstrate the glory of God and not the glory of ourselves. It is good for us to remember how precious the truth that has been revealed to us is.
