Genesis 1:20-23
God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of sky.” God created the large sea creatures, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
Here we have an answer to a question: “Which came first the chicken or the egg?” The chicken was created before the egg and the chicken was created on day five. Here we read that “swarms of living creatures” were made at once. It wasn’t that one organism that developed into others through evolution.
What we learn here is that animals were created as adults and given the “blessing” to reproduce. It is very interesting that God talks to animals like this. It makes me happy that God blessed the animals because it shows how much He cares for every living creature. We should treat every living creature with respect like God does. It is interesting to note that God didn’t bless the plants like this. This is the first place we read the words “living creatures.” Plants aren’t spoken of as living creatures. The Bible also says that God “created” when he made the animals. He didn’t use this word for the plants when they came from the dirt. He blessed the animals, but He didn’t talk to the plants like that. So I conclude that the plants should not be considered “persons” or “spirits” like some say today.
Among the water animals that were created on this day were the “large sea creatures.” This is when the water dinosaurs were created along with the great whales. All of the flying dinosaurs were created on day five too. So it is true that the dinosaurs roamed the sea and air before man, but it was only one day before. After that they lived together.
