Day 81: Recognizing Our Ignorance

John 9:40-41 : Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains.

The Pharisees were claiming that Jesus was a sinner. The truth is, they didn’t know what He was and they were very confused. The were also actively trying to maintain their position of favor with the Roman powers. Basically, they were enjoying the life of power and respect. They were more willing to protect their positions than they were to find out if Jesus really was from God.

Because they claimed that they could see, they were living a lie. It would have been better for them had they simply claimed that they could not tell who Jesus was and spend more time listening and reading the scriptures to find out. I believe that this is what Nicodemus was probably doing and it was obviously helping him.

As I go through the Bible, there are things that I don’t really understand well and I am not able to speak dogmatically about the topic. Sometimes I understand only some of what we read. The important thing is that we keep learning. The Bible says that God will aways be higher than we are:

Isaiah 55:9 : “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

As sinners we are really are blind to the things of God. We need to come to admit that we need to be saved. Until we admit this we remain blind and in our sin.
